The
Process
Karen Hallis talks about the
coaching process.
One-on-one coaching
The foundational work
First,
we talk in general terms about your life. We meet for coffee (if
geographically possible) and get to know one another. We talk
about your reasons for calling me, and I give you an overview of
the coaching process. We discuss my background so that you can
determine whether we are compatible. We start building the
partnership that will expand with our continued work together.
Second,
I generate an inventory of questions for you based on our initial
meeting. The questions come from my experience of you and my
coaching experience. This is an inventory of your capabilities and
what works and has worked in your life. Your responses to the
questions and your reactions to answering these questions provide
information about your approach to living and conducting business.
This inventory serves as an invaluable reference throughout our
coaching process.
Third,
we have an opening meeting. Once I receive and review the
completed inventory,
we schedule a time for an approximately three-hour meeting. I call
it an "opening meeting," because it is the first
step in the coaching process that expands your awareness of your
current living/business practices and how they impact you.
In this meeting we define the
coaching relationship and jointly craft our plan. What do you want
from coaching? How do you want to do it in terms of length of
calls, interval, the use of email/snail mail between calls? What
do you want to achieve?
Beginning the process
At the conclusion of the opening
meeting, we begin our scheduled coaching sessions. Typically
clients choose from a variety of options that are tailored to meet
each client’s particular requirements. Halfway through a
coaching cycle, and then at the end, I email you a short list of
questions designed to promote learning and fine-tune our
coaching process.
At the end of a coaching cycle, you
and I decide how continued coaching can deliver the desired
benefits. Most of my clients extend coaching beyond the initial
three or four months segment in order to delve deeper into the process and
gain the maximum benefits from that additional work.
